The newly built, 6,900-square-foot house on Farm Street in Dover is not a McMansion. In fact, when landscaping has matured in a few years, it might be pretty hard to tell when the house was built.
A couple of years ago when local real estate developer Christopher Kelly of Insight Partners Inc. in Newton was contacted by Mary Crane of Century 21 Commonwealth about a small carriage house on two acres on Dover's most desirable street he couldn't resist the opportunity to create something there.
"Having the chance to build something on Farm Street was a wonderful and challenging opportunity," he said. "That's an exclusive neighborhood in the horsey end of town, and I wanted to be sure I built something that would blend into the existing landscape."
Construction of the classic New England farm house was completed a few weeks ago. The house is set on a hill and is adjacent to acres of conservation land. The Charles River separating Dover from Sherborn is just a stone's throw away. Well-planned masonry is stately and the large wrap around farmer's porch is inviting.
The interior is roomy and comfortable. Colors including soft green, buttery gold and pale blue are contrasted by white woodwork and hardwood floors.
"It wasn't easy designing this house because we're not sure what its owners will want -- or what their style will be, so we just went with a classic look that leaves room for a lot of opportunities," said exclusive listing broker Mary Crane of Century 21 Fine Homes & Estates.
"It's a beautiful home of the highest quality. Very traditional and understated," Crane said.
On the first floor, a family room with fireplace and built-in entertainment center is adjacent to the breakfast room and kitchen beyond. The kitchen has everything a chef could want: granite counters, Sub-Zero fridge, Wolf stove, two dishwashers, warming draw and pull-out spice racks.
A cherry-paneled library is decidedly more formal, as is the living room, which is adorned with columns and has a fireplace. In the dining room white wainscoting, tray ceiling, wall lamps and pass-through wet bar add to the natural flow for entertaining.
On the second floor there are four bedrooms and a master suite consisting of a large bedroom with fireplace, dressing/sitting room, walk-in closet and his-and-hers bath.
The third floor offers a large bonus room. Already carpeted and painted, this space can be configured to suit anyone's needs. It also has a full bath and dormer windows with bench seats that keep it bright.
In addition, the house has a basement large enough to accommodate a lap pool and a heated three car garage,
